Why gravel driveways fail in North Texas (and how we build them so they do not)
Most of the driveways we are called to fix were never built with a base. Somebody dumped a load of rock on black clay, spread it with a box blade and called it done. Two wet winters later the rock has sunk into the mud and the ruts are back. Our clay soils swell when wet and shrink when dry, so a driveway needs three things: a compacted base, a crown so water runs off the sides, and somewhere for that water to go.
Here is how we build one:
- Grade and shape. We cut the driveway to grade with the skid steer or excavator, remove soft spots and topsoil, and shape a crown down the center.
- Base course. Crushed limestone flexbase goes down 4 to 6 inches thick on residential drives and 6 to 8 inches where trucks and trailers will run. Fabric is added over soft clay when the budget allows; it pays for itself.
- Compaction. Every lift is rolled with our Wacker RD12 double-drum roller or plate compactor, wet, until it locks up. This is the step that gets skipped by the dump-and-spread guys.
- Top coat (optional). A finish layer of 1-inch limestone, washed rock or crushed granite for looks and a cleaner surface.
- Drainage. Side ditches, culvert pipe at the road and any low spots are handled so the driveway sheds water instead of holding it.
What a gravel driveway costs
Every driveway is priced after a quick site visit because length, width, how much base the ground needs and how far the material has to haul all change the number. Material is delivered by the load and installed by the hour or as a flat project price, so you see exactly what you are paying for. Repairs on an existing driveway are usually a fraction of a new build. Quotes are free and we will tell you honestly if a cheaper fix will hold up.

Gravel driveway FAQ
How long does a gravel driveway installation take?
Most residential driveways are done in one to two days. Long acreage drives, culvert work or drainage repairs can add a day.
Flexbase or gravel: which should I use?
Flexbase (crushed limestone road base) packs into a hard, almost paved surface and is the right choice for the base of any driveway and for truck and trailer traffic. Clean gravel or washed rock looks nicer and stays looser, so we use it as a top coat over a compacted flexbase base.
Can you fix my existing driveway instead of replacing it?
Usually, yes. If the base is there and it has just rutted or washboarded, we regrade, add material where it is thin, restore the crown and re-compact. If there was never a base we will tell you, and a rebuild is often not much more than a heavy repair.
Do you handle the culvert at the road?
Yes. We install and replace culvert pipe and headwalls at driveway entrances. Some cities and counties require a permit or a specific pipe size for the entrance; we will tell you what applies at your address.
How thick should the gravel be?
Four to six inches of compacted base for cars and pickups, six to eight inches where you will run dump trucks, trailers or RVs. Thin driveways are the ones that fail.
